Greg Lange of Draftworks Horse Logging answers questions at the 2011 Mother Earth News Fair in Puyallup, Washington.

My husband and I spent the weekend at the Mother Earth News Fair in Puyallup. We went to a number of workshops that were presented. Some of the workshops we attended covered topics on natural and green building, passive solar, mini-hydro power, solar power, heritage breed farming, fencing, pollinators, and apple grafting. We also watched earth oven and horse logging demonstrations, looked at a number of exhibits and listened to keynote speakers Joel Salatin and Dan Chiras. We will definitely go again!

I just love my home state of Washington. Springtime reminds me how lush and green everything is. The pay-off of the rain, I suppose. Washington has so many places to photograph. I love it! From the countryside to the cities, events big and small, wilderness and nature, it is harder to decide what to photograph than it is to find something to shoot.

Glacial Heritage Preserve

I spent a few hours at Glacial Heritage Preserve near Littlerock on Prairie Appreciation Day. There were a lot of exhibitors from various conservation groups and agencies. I had some very interesting conversations about mason bees, Sustainable Prisons Project, and learned that you can make ink from oak galls. I was also thrilled that the weather cleared up and we had some interesting clouds!

Scatter Creek Wildlife Area in Rochester is one of my favorite local places to hike and photograph. It is an old farm that was acquired by the Washington Dept. of Fish & Wildlife. There are several different places to park, each leading to exploring different areas and types of ecosystems. Scatter Creek runs through it, there are 2 barns, and you can have dogs off-leash much of the year. Parts of the year, you can find wildflowers like camas, prairie sunflowers, and shooting stars. One area has many oak trees. There are also a few Mima Mounds on the site. The WDFW releases pheasants there during hunting season, so I tend to avoid it during hunting hours on those days. Except for pheasant release days, the place is pretty lonely. You do need a WDFW parking permit to park there. You will need a Discover Pass after July 1, 2011 unless you have the parking permit provided with a hunting or fishing license.
